What makes wildfire smoke difficult to manage?

That laboratory rating is not a promise of 95% protection for the wearer: air leaking around the face seal can reduce real-world protection.

A genuine NIOSH-approved filtering facepiece respirator carries required markings, including the approval holder or manufacturer, model or part number, NIOSH name, filter designation and a TC approval number. Check that number in the NIOSH Certified Equipment List rather than relying on “N95 style” or “N95 level” wording.

Health Canada also describes the Canadian CAN/CSA Z94.4.1 designation, including respirators marked CA-N95. The label and applicable standard still need to be checked for the exact product.

Can a KN95 help with wildfire smoke?

Canadian guidance includes an appropriate KN95 or KF94 as an equivalent respirator option that can help reduce fine-particle exposure when it fits well, is worn properly and outdoor time cannot be avoided. The comparison only holds when the exact product conforms to its stated standard and seals to the wearer’s face.

KN95 is associated with a Chinese respirator standard and KF94 with a Korean standard, but letters printed on a package are not automatic proof that a product was manufactured, tested or labelled correctly. Certification check: Do not describe a KN95 as NIOSH-approved unless that exact model has a NIOSH approval. Describe it by its applicable standard only after the product documentation and markings have been verified.

Why is a surgical mask different?

Surgical and medical masks serve useful purposes, but they normally fit loosely. When a mask leaves open gaps at the nose, cheeks or chin, inhaled air can travel around the filter material. That makes it less suitable than a close-fitting respirator for reducing exposure to wildfire-smoke particles.

A medical mask may provide some particulate reduction, depending on its material and fit, but Health Canada describes this protection as lower than that of a well-fitting respirator. It should not be presented as equivalent to a respirator for wildfire-smoke exposure.

Fit matters as much as the category

Even an approved respirator cannot perform as intended when air bypasses the filter. Choose a size and shape that covers the nose, mouth and chin. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions each time, adjust the straps and nosepiece, and check all edges for gaps.

Facial hair crossing the sealing surface can prevent a close fit. Face shape also matters: a model that seals well for one person may leak for another. When practical, households can keep more than one appropriate size or shape rather than assuming one model will fit everyone.

Practical seal check: Follow the product instructions. Canadian guidance says the material should pull inward when you inhale and air should not escape around the edges when you exhale. Who needs extra care when using a respirator?

Federal guidance says respirators should not be used by children under two, by someone who has trouble breathing while wearing one, or by someone who cannot remove it without help. A respirator does not replace cleaner air

Keep windows and doors closed when outdoor smoke is poor if the indoor temperature remains safe, and use an appropriate air-cleaning strategy where available.
