What is a COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test Kit?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), rapid antigen test kits are immunoassays used to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 (virus causing COVID-19) from a nasal swab specimen. Rapid antigen tests are less expensive than PCR testing and will provide results as fast as 15-30 minutes.

How does COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test Kits work?

A sample taken from a nasal or throat swab, nasal secretions, or saliva is placed directly into an extraction buffer which will disrupt the SARS-CoV-2 virus to release its antigen proteins. The solution is then applied to a test cartridge where any present antigen proteins, such as the nucleocapsid protein (N protein), will migrate and interact with the strip-shaped coating of the test line which has SARS-CoV-2-antigen-specific antibodies. If the test line shows a change in colour, it indicates a positive result.

How to Read Results from a COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test Kit?

Positive: 2 coloured lines will be present. Both in the C (control) and T (test) section.

Negative: 1 coloured line will be present in the C section.

Invalid: No coloured lines are present or 1 coloured line in the T section.

Can COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test Kit be used as the sole diagnosis or as a confirmatory test for SARS-CoV-2 infection?

No, rapid antigen tests have been designed to act as a supplementary test for suspected cases of COVID-19. Testing can be performed on both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients to determine a result. Studies have shown that early testing within the first 4 days of sickness typically means a higher viral load providing easier detection.

Results from rapid antigen testing should NOT be used as the sole basis to diagnose COVID-19 because RT-PCR testing is still the gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19 due to its high specificity and sensitivity.

What are the benefits of COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test Kit?

Rapid antigen tests offer a faster, less expensive alternative to RT-PCR testing with results available within 15-30 minutes. Pilot projects are ongoing throughout the world to determine the value of frequent rapid antigen testing to reduce transmission of COVID-19 when combined with other safety measures.
